Yek Min Ek Foundation disburses 24 Scholarships for 2020

BINTULU: The Trustees’ Meeting for Yek Min Ek Foundation was held on 14th August, 2020. It was presided by The Chairman, Mr Yek Siew Liong and in attendance were Mr Hii Ching Chiong, Dr Wong Ching Seh, Mr Law Siong Lee, Mr Timothy Yek Li-Yuan and Mdm Edith Kiu Poh Een.

This is the first digital online meeting for the Board as a precautionary measure against the spread of Covid-19. Mr Yek Siew Liong noted that there was a surge of 450 online applications through www.ymef.my compared with 5 applications on paper. However, only 125 digital applications were completed.  Hence, there were 130 candidates for the Board of Trustees to select the Yek Min Ek Foundation scholars for 2020.

This is an overwhelming response of online applications.  In 2018, with the launch of online applications, there were 4 online submissions and 15 in subsequent year of 2019. This year’s applications are from all over East and West Malaysia.

Criteria for selection is for needy students outstanding in study and conduct, irrespective of their ethnicity and the discipline they choose to pursue.  The key significance is to help them discover their potential, develop their capabilities so that they can make practical contribution towards our country’s development in general and to Sarawak in particular, and inculcate the spirit of giving back.

The Board selected 10 scholars out of 130 candidates as new Scholars 2021. 14 scholars chosen in previous years are still eligible to continue receiving their scholarships for this year.

In total Yek Min Ek Foundation will disburse 24 scholarships for 2020.

The Board authorized the Secretary to interview and request any necessary documents from the selected candidates to verify their submissions.

The meeting was conducted using ZOOM and a special appreciation to the Chairman, Mr Yek Siew Liong for the vision to embrace the advancement of digital age and transformation and to Mr Timothy Yek Li-Yuan for its realization.
