71 apply for Datuk Yek Min Ek Foundation scholarship

 

BINTULU, Wed – Ten students were selected to receive the Datuk Yek Min Ek Foundation scholarship this year.

A total of 71 students, 36 form 6 students, 19 undergraduates and 16 others submitted their application for the scholarship this year.

A meeting chaired by Datuk Yek Min Ek and attended by board members was held at Regent Hotel’s conference room here yesterday to select the suitable applicants.

Datuk Yek Min Ek, a well-known philanthropist in Sarawak started the Yek Min Ek Foundation in 1984.

Since then, 85 scholarships have been awarded to the deserving applicants.

Datuk Yek said that since the scholarship were given out in 1984, a totl of 68 scholarship holders have graduated from various universities.

He said with the number of 10 scholarships to be awarded  this year, the total number of scholarships give out would be 95.

Datuk Yek also urged more eligible bumiputra students to apply for the scholarship next year.

Attending the meeting yesterday were board members, Mr Yek Siew Liong, Pemanca Moh Liong Gang, Dr Wong Ching Seh, board secretaries Councillor Hii Ching Chiong and Edith Kiu. Absent from the meeting was Datuk Seri Ding Jack Sung.
