BINTULU: The Trustees’ Meeting was held on 9 September 2021. The meeting was chaired by the Chairman, Mr Yek Siew Liong and attended by the Trustees, Mr Hii Ching Chiong, Dr Wong Ching Seh, Mr Law Siong Lee, Mr Timothy Yek and Trustee cum Secretary, Mdm Edith Kiu Poh Een.
The Chairman thanked all the trustees for attending the meeting which is conducted via Zoom online meeting as a precautionary measure against the highly infectious Covid-19.
There were 86 online applications through www.ymef.my but only 28 digital applications were completed for the Board of Trustees to select the Yek Min Ek Foundation Scholars for 2021.
The foresight of the Chairman for digital application is very apt during the restrictions enforced by the government to curb the spread of the covid-19 virus; hence, Yek Min Ek Foundation could go contactless without relying on the post/courier or of the restricted operating hours of the office for students to pick up or submit the paper application forms.
Applications were received from various parts of Malaysia, namely, Kelantan, Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Sarawak, Selangor. Applicants from Sarawak hail from Bintulu, Kuching, Lundu, Miri and Sibu.
13 scholars were chosen out of 28 candidates. With the 18 continuing Scholars from previous years, there is a total of 31 Yek Min Ek Foundation Scholars for 2021.
Criteria for selection is needy students outstanding in study and conduct, irrespective of their ethnicity and the discipline they choose to pursue. The key significance is to help them discover their potential, develop their capabilities so that they can make practical contribution towards the country’s development in general and to Sarawak in particular, and appreciate the spirit of giving back.
A special appreciation was mentioned to Trustee Mr Timothy Yek for designing and maintaining the website for Yek Min Ek Foundation and to the Secretary for compiling the list and summarised details of the applicants for the Trustees to make an informed selection of the Scholars.
